PALO ALTO HILLS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB, Palo Alto, California
The 18-hole, par 72 layout which incorporated in 1958, offers spectacular sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay and is located next to the 500-plus acre Arastradero Open Space Preserve. JMP worked closely with the membership, Course Superintendent Andrew Morgan, and key staff to create a Renovation Master Plan that addressed short and long-term interests for the private club. The club was faced with the immediate need to selectively remove diseased Monterey Pines and continue a program to reduce irrigation use, including turf reduction, in light of the on-going drought in the greater region. Construction on the front nine was completed in the Summer of 2021 and the back nine was completed in the Summer of 2022. The transformation of the course from a parkland, tree-lined style to a more ‘rustic’ and open character that is in greater harmony with the open space preserve was fully realized. The complete make-over included enlarged tees, sand-capped fairways and larger greens built to USGA standards. The updated strategic bunkering was personally painted in the field by Brian Costello. PARAHYANGAN GOLF, Bandung, Indonesia
Incomparable visual drama is one of the great strengths of this 18-hole championship golf course. Located on a spectacular landform, the course flows along the deeply incised ravines and lake edges of Lake Saguling and climbs onto the flanks of surrounding mountains offering commanding views of the valley floor. The course also features a highly-strategic layout featuring multiple lines of play on virtually every hole. Parahyangan Golf is a key component of Kota Baru Parayhangan, a carefully planned, mixed-use development spreading over an area of 1,250 hectares. This award-winning “new city” is home to over 2,200 residences, schools, shops, restaurants, hospital, and a water park. The course opened in 2020.
SAI GOLF CLUB, Ayutthaya, Thailand
Located near the ancient capitol of Bangkok this big, bold golf course is being sculpted into a landform of rice fields and canals. The layout is designed as a “stadium course” incorporating large elevated viewing areas and a length of 7,600 yards for the expressed purpose of hosting major tournaments. Sweeping topography with elevation changes of 15 meters are being achieved primarily by lowering the site’s existing water table. This method of achieving bold movement on flat land was first used at Rajpruek Club, a sister course to Sai Golf Club located in Bangkok. The soft opening is scheduled late 2022.
SUVARNA JAKARTA GOLF CLUB, Jakarta, Indonesia
Blessed with an excellent location inside the city of Jakarta this entirely new 27-hole championship golf course is situated on the site of the old Halim 2 golf course. With the exception of location, the new layout shares nothing with the original 18-hole military course. The design style of Suvarna Jakarta is best described as Indonesian ‘links’. Elements such as riveted bunkers, burns (walled canals), large green complexes and highly strategic bunkering are borrowed from the historic links courses. These elements are married with the best of the Indonesian landscape including majestic trees, water in all its forms and the colorful, native landscape palette. One of Suvarna’s most striking features is the ‘Elysian Field’. The Field integrates three par 5 finishing holes into a broad landform with shared fairways, cross bunkering, meandering burns and dozens of possible lines of play.
